Mental health

The first step counts.

Looking after your mental health already takes courage. Working out the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychotherapist and a psychologist shouldn't be one more obstacle.

The psychiatrist: a specialist doctor

A psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in mental health. They make a diagnosis, offer psychotherapy and can, if necessary, prescribe medication and monitor how it is working. Dr Alessandra Canuto is an FMH specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, with in-depth expertise in liaison psychiatry and old age psychiatry.

The psychotherapist and the psychologist

A psychologist has completed a university degree in psychology. A psychotherapist, on the other hand, is specifically trained to conduct psychotherapy. Ms Laura Frambati is an FSP psychologist-psychotherapist specialising in adult psychiatry: crisis management, psychotherapeutic follow-up, eating disorders, liaison psychiatry.

How to choose?

The real question isn't the job title, but what you need. A difficult period, anxiety, bereavement, exhaustion: psychotherapy is often the right starting point. More pronounced disorders, questions about treatment, a complex situation: the psychiatrist is the right person to see. And if you don't know where to start, your GP is an excellent first step.

Psychiatrist, psychotherapist, psychologist: who should you see?
